Minerva Crafts was having a sale so I took advantage and decided to actually have a go at trying to make a top. It was the main reason I decided to buy a sewing machine after all.
The trouble with buying fabric online you just can’t tell what it is like. I really need to find somewhere local that sells a good choice of dressmaking fabric. I did buy some fabric for a couple of things that was in the sale at £3.99 a metre it wasn’t too much to lose if it was bad.
The first I got was some lightweight crepe in black and white for go with the tunic top. I like option A, but the hem of option D. I have big arms and legs so don’t like showing them off. I’m thinking maybe an Ivory would have been better suited but it will be my practise run.
Secondly I bought Simplicity 8056. I have really problems getting any kind of jeans to fit me they are either too big on the hips/bum or tight on the legs, or fit the legs but are falling down all the time. I was unsure which size to purchase and since Minerva don’t show the back of the pack where the sizing is I went for the larger sizing, ( again with my calves even baggy jeans look like skinny on me) I would rather have to trim some off than start adding.
For this I bought a heavyweight deep blue denim ( that didn’t arrive withe package) and a lightweight denim, as shown.
The other three patterns Simplicity 1318, and Burda 6838 and 6840 I didn’t buy any fabric for these. I have seen some gorgeous fabric on eBay but again, is it worth it. Plus I need to put a hold on spending now for a bit. However I am thinking the Kimono would have been the easiest to start with!
I am going to spend the evening watching You Tube videos to get some tips and see if anyone has made these before, I’m thinking now I should have started with something a bit more easier! 😕
